UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, MERCED

Aiming for certification at the highest Green Building standards awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council's third-party verification system, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) program, the University of California, Merced campus has made the LEED Gold certification its minimum green building standard since 2009. As the newest campus in the UC system, the Merced campus is also aiming to be a national leader in sustainable construction. The campus plan includes a commitment to be Triple Net Zero by 2020, with zero net energy demand, zero landfill waste produced and zero net greenhouse gas emissions. Going to the highest green building standard, LEED Platinum, for their new $88 million Science and Engineering Building 2 Project, sustainable NaturalPAVE® XL Resin Pavement™ was specified for paving the plaza and bike parking area adjacent to the new building. NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement products set the standard for sustainable pavement materials as they are non-toxic in composition, cold-manufactured and cold-applied, and solar reflective. These flexible, joint-free pavement installations provide an alternative to concrete pavements and the air pollution generated by heated cement manufacturing processes, responsible for approximately five percent of global carbon emissions. NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement is also a green alternative to the negative environmental impacts of hot mix asphalt materials, including their toxic composition, high levels of fossil fuel consumption, air pollution emissions from their heated manufacturing and installation processes, and black heat absorbent surfaces that contribute to Urban Heat Island and greenhouse gas emissions that accelerate climate change. Sustainable NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement products are increasingly being specified for Green Building projects seeking to achieve the very highest levels of LEED certification.

University of California, Merced, the newest UC campus in the Golden State, is at the edge of the foothills and circled by golden grasslands for much of the year. As with the natural rock materials for the stone walls constructed around the outside of the building, the availability of a selection of NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement mixtures gave the project landscape architect the opportunity to specify a golden pavement mixture that complements the coloration of the natural rock materials in the stone walls. The golden pavements and stone walls visually tie the high tech green building with its natural surroundings, leading the eye of the viewer to the open space area and the pasture lands adjacent to the buildings, then to the foothills and the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the distance. Formulated to display the natural coloration of the constituent aggregate materials of each NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement mixture, these sustainable pavement materials provide designers and project owners with the opportunity to incorporate a unique natural aesthetic into the green building projects of the future.
